We're looking at the book of Hebrews at church, and I've been writing some lyrics for a song as we go. The main problem is that I've written about six verses for this song and only gone through the first three chapters of the thirteen-chapter book! So I'm thinking it probably needs some work.
I'm undecided on the tune, but for now you can sing it to the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic", which you may also know as "Little Peter Rabbit"!
Long ago at many times in many different ways
God spoke to our fathers by the prophets that He sent
But now we know him better than the prophets ever could
Because He sent His Son
Inheritor of heav’n and earth, the radiance of God
The glory of the Father and sustaining word with pow’r
He died to make us pure and now he sits at God’s right hand
Jesus the Son of God.
Jesus is the firstborn, even angels worship him
His character is perfect, being right and good and true
His kingdom stands forever and his enemies are made
A footstool for his feet.
God in Jesus brought salvation freely to the world
All you men and women, listen carefully today
We shall not escape unless we hide ourselves in Him
The God who knows us all.
Jesus is our brother, taking on our skin and flesh
Tempted, never sinning, Jesus chose to suffer death
Controlling even death he rose to ransom lifelong slaves
Our perfect sacrifice.
God gave Moses honour for his faith to lead his house
But he was just a servant to the owner, Jesus Christ
And now we are his house indeed by holding fast to him
Our confidence and hope.
The Holy Spirit urges us to harden not our hearts
For there remains a Sabbath rest that we should strive to gain
Exhort each other every day, let sin be sick and die
So we may share in Christ.
Since we have a great high priest who passed through heav’n and hell
We draw near with confidence to Jesus in his grace
His weakness is our strength and his obedient suffering
Salvation for the world.
Glory, glory alleluia!
Glory, glory alleluia!
Take up your cross and follow Him to glory on the hill
Take heart, endure, press on!
Feel free to submit your own verse (preferably picking up from Hebrews chapter 4 and onwards), or to suggest ways to cull and combine lines!
